Exceptions for income requirements when applying for family immigration with a refugee in Norway

If you apply for family immigration with someone who has been granted protection (asylum), there are two time limits you must keep in mind to remain exempt from the income requirement: when to register your application and when to submit it

Published: 30.06.2017 - Last changed: 12.10.2020

If you are the spouse, cohabitant or child (17 years or younger) of a person who has been granted protection in Norway, you can be granted family immigration without any income requirement on the person you want to join in Norway. But the requirement will only be waived if you register and submit your application within the correct time limits.

The 2 time limits:

  1. Within 6 months of the date of your family member's decision letter (i.e. the letter stating that protection was granted):
    • your application for family immigration must be registered online via udi.no
    • the application fee of NOK 7 800 must be paid
  2. Within one year of the date of your family member's decision letter:
    • you must meet up in person at a Norwegian foreign mission or an application centre to hand in all your documents

Please note, your application will not be considered submitted until you show up and have handed in the necessary documents.

If you miss these time limits, your family member will have to meet an income requirement in order for family immigration to be possible.

If your family member was granted protection in Norway before 1 August 2017 other rules apply.
