Received an answer Your application for protection has been rejected
What situation are you in?
-
My application for protection has been rejected, and I have received an advance notice that I may be expelled from Norway – what do I have to do?
Your application for protection (asylum) has been rejected, and you have an obligation to leave Norway and the EU / Schengen area by the given deadline.
You have also received advance notice that we will consider expelling you from Norway if you do not leave the EU / Schengen area by the deadline.
What happens if I leave before the deadline?
If you leave by the deadline for departure, you have complied with your duty. We will not open a case to consider expulsion if you leave within the deadline. You must register your departure by presenting your travel document at the border control.
What happens if I do not leave by the deadline?
UDI will open a case and consider expelling you from Norway
If you do not leave by the deadline for departure, UDI will open a case and consider expelling you from Norway.
If you are expelled, you will receive an entry ban. You will be refused entry to the entire EU / Schengen area for as long as the entry ban applies.
If you are expelled, you will receive a letter from UDI about this, if we know your address in your home country. If you have not provided the address in your application for a residence permit and you plan to travel back to Norway and/or the EU / Schengen area at a later date, you should contact UDI or a Norwegian embassy or consulate before you travel. We can let you know if you have received an entry ban.
You can still send information to UDI which may be relevant to your case
If you do not travel by the deadline, you can send us information that may be of importance to your case. You do not need to send us information that you have previously sent us. But if you have other information that may be of relevance if we consider expulsion, you can send this to UDI or the police. In the advance notice, you have been given a deadline to provide us with information that may be of importance to your case.
Can I extend the deadline for departure?
There are very few who get an extended deadline for departure. If you cannot travel within the deadline for departure, you must contact the police and apply for an extension (external website). It is important that you apply before the deadline for departure. It is up to the police to decide whether you can get an extended deadline for departure.

UDI has rejected my application - can I appeal the decision?
You will be assigned a lawyer by UDI, and you can appeal the decision. The lawyer will explain the decision and help you with the appeal.
You can also get advice from organisations that offer free legal aid, such as Norwegian Organisation for Asylum Seekers (NOAS) (external website), Self Help for Immigrants and Refugees (SEIF) (external website), Legal counselling for women (JURK) (external website), and Jussbuss (external website).
UDI will consider your appeal. If UDI does not reverse its decision, it will send the case to the Immigration Appeals Board (UNE), (external website).
Once your case has been sent to UNE, UNE will be responsible for your case, and you must contact UNE (external website) if you have new documents or information.
You can normally stay in Norway while UNE is considering your appeal. This is called 'deferred implementation' of a decision. If you have not been granted deferred implementation, you must leave Norway before UNE has considered your appeal. If you do not return to your home country of your own accord, the police can send you back.
If you apply for asylum in another Dublin country, that country can request that you be sent back to Norway. When you return to Norway, your asylum application will not be reconsidered. The rejection you have received will still apply and you have to return to your home country. If you do not return to your home country of your own accord, the police can send you back.
You can be granted financial support and help for assisted return by UDI and IOM.

UNE has rejected my appeal - can I appeal the decision?
No, you must go back to your home country within the deadline set by UNE. If you are in Norway after the deadline has expired, then you are staying illegally in Norway.
If you are staying at an asylum reception centre, you will be paid less money than before.
You cannot apply for another type of residence permit, for example for family immigration or work. If you want to apply on these grounds, you must do so from your home country.
You will lose your right to health care and medical assistance.
If you have a temporary work permit as an asylum seeker, you will now lose it.
UDI cannot change UNE's decisions. The rejection you have received from UNE is final, and your case has been concluded. If you have questions about the decision you have received from UNE, you can contact your lawyer or contact UNE (external website).
You can be granted financial support and help for assisted return by UDI and IOM. It is important that you apply before the deadline expires. If you do, you will receive more support than if you apply after the deadline.
If you apply for asylum in another Dublin country, that country can request that you be sent back to Norway. When you return to Norway, your application for asylum will not be reconsidered. The rejection you have received will still apply and you have to return to your home country. If you do not return to your home country of your own accord, the police can send you back.

My deadline for leaving Norway has expired - what happens now?
You can be granted financial support and help for assisted return by UDI and IOM.
If you do not leave Norway, then you are staying illegally in Norway. This means that:
- You will be deported by the police.
- You will be expelled from Norway and other Schengen countries for a period of 1–5 years. During this period, you cannot travel to Norway or other Schengen countries.
- You cannot return to Norway until you have paid the costs of your deportation.
-
What do I have to remember to do before I leave Norway?
You must return to your home country when your application for protection has been rejected. If it does take some time before you leave Norway, you must make sure that you let the police know where you live.
- If you move to a new address, you must tell the local police. Either the police where you are moving to, or where you lived before. You may send them an e-mail orletter. Go to contact information for the police.
- If you live at an asylum reception centre, or you wish to do so, go to information on living at or moving from a reception centre.
