Convicted persons must wait longer to be granted a permanent residence permit

If you have been sentenced to imprisonment, community service or fines, you will have to wait for an additional period before you can apply for a permanent residence permit.

Fixed penalty notices (for example a parking ticket), mediation in the Mediation and Reconciliation Service or a decision not to bring criminal charges will not result in an extension of the waiting period.

If you have been convicted or fined by the police or if you are under investigation for a criminal offence, you have to wait longer to become a Norwegian citizen. This is called a 'disqualification period'.
