Notification of Norwegian citizenship for Nordic citizens

To apply for Norwegian citizenship, Nordic citizens can now submit a 'simplified notification of citizenship for Nordic citizens' online. There is no need to book an appointment with the police.

This service enables citizens of Nordic countries to log in with an eID and complete an application via udi.no (external website). The application form retrieves your national ID number from the ID Portal (ID-porten), as well as selected personal information from the National Population Register (Folkeregisteret). The information is filled in automatically in the form.

Do you qualify to submit a simplified notification of citizenship?

The answers you provide in the application form determine whether you should submit a simplified notification or a full application for Norwegian citizenship for Nordic citizens. If you qualify to submit a simplified notification of Norwegian citizenship, you can choose whether you want to submit the notification digitally without having to attend an appointment with the police. You can still choose to submit the notification by attending an appointment with the police, but then it will take longer to get a response because you have to wait for an available appointment with the police.

How to submit a simplified notification of citizenship digitally

To submit your notification online and avoid having to attend an appointment with the police, log in to udi.no using your eID. At the same time, it is important that you have your criminal record certificate ready (preferably as a PDF) when you fill in the application form. The criminal record certificate must be no older than 3 months when you submit the notification. If the criminal record certificate you have is older than 3 months, you can order a criminal record certificate here (external website)

You upload the certificate immediately after submitting your application form and paying the fee. This is why it is important that you have the criminal record certificate ready when you fill in the form. If you ordered the criminal record certificate online, we recommend that you upload the PDF file you received. You can also upload the criminal record certificate in one of the following formats: .jpg, .jpeg, .odt, .docx, .doc, .txt, .png and .bmp. However, if you do not upload the police certificate as a PDF file, it will take longer for you to get a response.

After you have uploaded the criminal record certificate and paid the fee, you will receive a receipt that the notification has been delivered. There is nothing more you need to do.

What happens after you have submitted the simplified notification of citizenship?

The simplified notification is sent to UDI, where a case is created automatically. The automatic case management system assesses the notification that has been submitted. You can read more about automatic processing of applications here.
