Your application for a residence permit has been rejected, and you have an obligation to leave Norway and the EU / Schengen area by the given deadline.

You have also received advance notice that we will consider expelling you from Norway if you do not leave the EU / Schengen area by the deadline. If you are expelled, you will receive an entry ban. You will be refused entry to the entire EU / Schengen area for as long as the entry ban applies.

If you do not leave by the deadline for departure: In the advance notice, you have been given a deadline to provide us with information that may be of importance to your case. You do not need to send us information that you have previously sent us. But if you have other information that may be of relevance if we consider expulsion, you can send this to UDI or the police.

If you are expelled, you will receive a letter from UDI, if we know your address in your home country. If you have not provided the address in your application for a residence permit and you plan to travel back to Norway and/or the EU / Schengen area at a later date, you should contact UDI or a Norwegian embassy or consulate before you travel. We can let you know if you have received an entry ban.

What happens if I leave before the deadline?

If you leave by the deadline for departure, you have complied with your duty. We will not open a case to consider expulsion if you leave by the deadline. You must register your departure by presenting your travel document at the border control.

If you do not leave by the deadline for departure, UDI will open a case and consider expelling you from Norway.

Can I extend the deadline for departure?

If you cannot travel by the deadline for departure, you must contact the police and apply for an extension (external website). It is important that you apply before the deadline for departure. There are very few who get an extended deadline for departure. It is up to the police to decide whether you may receive an extension.

UDI will consider whether to expel you from Norway if you

• have received a penalty or special sanction for an offence
• have given incorrect information to the authorities
• have been arrested by the police without a residence permit

The police or UDI will send you a letter to inform you that we are considering whether you should be expelled. You will receive information about why we are considering having you expelled and about your rights to a lawyer and an interpreter.

If you believe that the information in the letter is incorrect, or if you have information that you believe we need in order to consider your case, you must send it to UDI within the deadline stated in the letter. You can also explain why you think that being expelled would be too severe or too great an intervention in your life seen in relation to the criminal offence.

We will consider your case and decide whether or not to expel you. You will then receive a letter from UDI stating whether you have been expelled and whether you are subject to a prohibition against entry, how long the prohibition against entry will be in force and how you can appeal.

After you have left Norway, you can apply to have the prohibition against entry lifted.

EU/EEA citizens can usually apply for lifting of the entry ban after one year. Citizens of a country outside the EU/EEA can usually apply after two years.

Yes, you can apply for family immigration if you

• have been expelled from Norway for a period of two or five years,
  and
• you have children in Norway with Norwegian citizenship, residence permit or right of residence according to the EU/EEA regulations.

You can apply for family immigration as early as six months before the prohibition against entry expires.

One of the conditions for applying for family immigration is that you cannot have an entry ban to Norway. Even if you have an entry ban, you can still submit an application for family immigration as early as six months before the entry ban expires.

Even if you are granted a family immigration permit before the prohibition against entry expires, you cannot travel to Norway and other Schengen countries until after the prohibition against entry has expired.

SIS is a database where the authorities in the Schengen countries register and exchange information about persons who have a duty to leave the EU/Schengen area or who have been banned from entering the EU/Schengen area.
